About the Artist:
Warren E. McDaniel AKA “Beth”
Warren was born in Dayton, Ohio, and as a child dreamed of someday going north to live in the bush country of Alaska, but as a boy this dream seemed a lifetime away. Besides youth and no money, one notable delay was a hitch in the Army from 1946 to 1949. After that he moved to Arizona, where he married and started a family. Both he and his wife shared the love of the outdoors and spent much of their spare time fishing and camping out.
Their dream of moving to Alaska seemed to always be one step behind another priority. They finally decided to set a date, then go, letting nothing stand in their way. So, in 1965 their dream became a reality. They ran out of gas and money some sixty miles out of Valdez, Alaska, and there they established their home for the next eight years. The first winter was a tough one, but it was no match for Warren, his wife and four children.
For many years he took any job that came along in order to survive and raise his family. He has worked as a guide, trapper, construction worker and commercial fisherman. He also worked at numerous small jobs as they presented themselves. In between jobs he sold pyrography and art work to the tourists.
All his life Warren has been able to entertain children and adults alike with his poetry and ability to draw. His first award was given to him in grade school, presented by the artist, Milton Caniff, in 1939. Warren has designed greeting cards and worked in silk screening. He also worked as a sign painter in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. He has published two cartoon books, one poem book, and several ink sketches. He has had a cartoon strip also running in a newspaper.
Warren is determined to spend the rest of his life portraying the beauty of Alaska and its wildlife through his artwork. Most of his work is done in pen and ink and he is has gained recognition as Alaska’s painter with a pen. His work has become known throughout the United States and Canada.
